5 Traditional Golden Milk (Haldi Doodh) Recipes

The Comfort of Haldi Doodh

Long before golden lattes became trendy in cafes, Haldi Doodh (Golden Milk) was a staple in Indian households: a warm, soothing cup made at the end of the day, especially in the cooler months.

Curcumin is fat-soluble, so traditional recipes warm turmeric in milk (or a creamy plant-based alternative) with a little ghee and a pinch of black pepper.

1. The Classic Family Recipe

This is the recipe passed down through generations: simple, warming and ready in five minutes.

Ingredients: 1 cup whole milk or almond milk, 1/4 tsp Meghana Organics Turmeric, a pinch of black pepper, 1 tsp pure ghee, honey to taste.

Method: Warm the milk gently in a saucepan. Whisk in the turmeric, pepper, and ghee. Let it simmer on low heat for 3 to 5 minutes to release the aroma. Turn off the heat, let it cool slightly, then stir in honey.

2. The Spiced Winter Warmer

Perfect for cold evenings, this version layers in the sweet spices of a masala chai.

Ingredients: Classic recipe + 1/4 tsp cinnamon powder, a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg, and 1 crushed green cardamom pod.

Method: Add the spices along with the turmeric during the simmering phase, then strain into a mug.

3. Vegan Coconut Golden Milk

An incredibly creamy, dairy-free alternative with a gentle tropical sweetness.

Ingredients: 1 cup full-fat coconut milk, 1/4 tsp turmeric, black pepper, 1/2 tsp vanilla extract, maple syrup.

Method: Heat the coconut milk carefully (do not bring it to a rolling boil, as it may separate). Whisk in the remaining ingredients and serve warm.

4. Saffron and Cardamom Golden Milk

A festive variation for special occasions, fragrant and pale gold.

Ingredients: Classic recipe + 4-5 strands of saffron and 2 crushed green cardamom pods.

Method: Soak the saffron in a spoonful of warm milk for 10 minutes, then add it with the cardamom while the milk simmers.

5. Morning Turmeric Lemon Water

If you prefer something lighter in the morning, this bright drink is quick to make.

Ingredients: 1 cup warm water, 1/4 tsp turmeric, black pepper, half a squeezed lemon, a tiny pinch of rock salt, honey to taste.

Method: Stir everything together until the turmeric is fully mixed and sip while warm.
